About us

Toranj Tuition is a non-profit community and education organisation that was founded in 2013 and limited by guarantee in 2015. Based in Kingston upon Hull, it was created to stimulate social mobility and facilitate equal opportunities. As improving education is at the heart of this process, our focus is providing activities that will help address educational underachievement and unemployment, both of which are fundamentally linked to poverty.

We seek to alleviate the root causes and underlying factors of these problems. Our community and education projects are divided into two main strands: (1) children and young people, and (2) adults.

Children & Young People

For children and young people, our main project is currently School Tuition Packages. This supplements classroom learning and supports pupils who are falling behind their peers. In 2021, we were made an Approved Tuition Partner by the National Tutoring Programme (NTP). In this role, we will deliver until the 2023/24 Academic Year, either from school premises or online. Competition to become an approved provider was strong, and no company in the city was initially successful despite Hull being the second most deprived local authority in England for education, skills and training (Indices of Deprivation, 2019).

Our child education projects aim to boost attainment, teach study skills, inspire, improve engagement with learning and develop their interest in further education. Increased self-confidence is an extra benefit. To meet these goals, also run project for Unaccompanied Asylum Seeker Children (UASCs) called New Beginnings and our Informal Science Clubs deliver STEM and heritage tuition to disadvantaged children. For our Informal Science Clubs, we are the only organisation in North England with funding for nearly the U.K most prestigious science organisations, including the British Science Association, Institute of Physics, Royal Society of Chemistry and Royal Academy of Engineering.

For adults main education project is ESOL for Work and Employability which combines English and employability tuition helpes participants in work. In addition have tailored course for highly-qualified refugees (who hold degrees and worked in professions like medicine, teaching and STEM before moving the U.K.) to improves their English and pass that necessary exams to return their careers.
